Prolacn (PRL) is a pituitary hormone responsible for the smulaon of milk-producon in women after parturion. It has an inhibitory effect on the producon of sex hormones i.e estrogen in women and testosterone in men. Aftr child- birth, there is an increase in the levels of prolacn. This increased level is maintained unl the woman is breast feeding. In women who do not breast feed, the prolacn levels are nearly normal.

Prolactin is also secreted in non pregnant women as well as in men, however the functional significance in either case is insignificant. It is responsible for sexual gratification (satisfication after sex). Prolactin also has an inhibitory effect on productuin of sex hormones i.e estrogen in women and testosterone in men.
After child birth there is increase in the level of prolactin. This increase level is maintained until the woman is breast feeding. In women who do not breast feed, the prolactin levels are near normal.
