It is used for early confirmation of pregnancy as well as in monitoring pregnancy. A rapid rise in the level of hCG indicates pregnancy.
Beta HCG is chemically produced by trophoblast tissue. Smaller amounts of hCG are also produced in the pituitary gland, liver, and colon. Elevated ratio of hCG indicates trophoblastic disease (moles, choriocarcinoma) and certain testicular tumors.
