Human Leukocyte angen B27 (HLA - B27) is a cell surface glycoproteins that are expressed on most nucleated human cells and platelets. The presence of HLA- B27 is strongly associated with ankylosing spondylis and some inflammatory disorders like Reiter’s syndrome, inflammatory bowel syndrome,
etc. This test is generally advised in paents of joint pain where the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylis is suspected.

MHC class 1 molecules are cell surface glycoproteins that are expressed on most nucleated human cells and platelets. The presence of HLA - B 27 is strongly associated with anklosing sopndylitis which is a chronic inflammation of axial musculoskeletal system and some inflammatory disorders like Reiter's syndrome, inflammatory bowl syndrome etc.
Clinical Significance
HLA- B27 test is generally advised to patients of joint pain where the diagnosis of ankylosing sponclylitis is suspected. There is a 90 fold increased chances of developing this disease if it is positive in an individual. Other inflammatory conditions it may be associated with include Reiter’s syndrome, acute anterior uveitis and inflammatory bowel disease.
